"Look Here!" A Portrait of Sylvia Sleigh
A documentary by Paula Ewin and Diana Sutherlin
In intimate interviews at home and in her studio, Ms. Sleigh dicusses her life as an artist in England and subsequently New York, where she settled after her husband, art critic Lawrence Alloway, was invited to become a curator at the Guggenheim Museum in 1962. A lively and animated speaker, Ms. Sleigh reveals her thoughts on a variety of topics including her technique and classical inspirations; her controversial portraits of male nudes, the feminist art movement of the 1960’s and 70’s and her marriage and partnership with one of the art world’s most brilliant and respected writers. Laced with numerous interviews and comments from important artists (Louise Bourgeois, Nancy Spero and Leon Golub, among others), critics (John Perreault), and friends, “Look Here!” A Portrait of Sylvia Sleigh includes vivid reproductions of Ms. Sleigh’s work and a variety of intimate photographs detailing this extraordinary woman’s life.
